Best 5G Router for Camper Vans (2026 Guide)

A good router is the heart of any camper van internet setup.

I’ve tested everything from phone hotspots to dedicated mobile routers, and the difference a proper router makes is enormous.

If you’re serious about working remotely, streaming, gaming, or simply staying connected while travelling, a dedicated 5G router is one of the best upgrades you can make.

Budget Options

TP-Link 4G+ Router

If you’re on a budget, a 4G+ router is still a huge improvement over using your phone as a hotspot. A 4G+ router can still deliver speeds close to that of 5G and likely in stone signal areas faster than Starlink

Benefits include:

• Better signal stability
• Multiple device support
• External antenna options
• Lower cost

For casual travelers, this may be all you need.

TP-Link 4G+ Router with WiFi 6

If you’re on a budget, but can stretch a little further to future proof yourself then a 4G+ router with wifi 6 is the way to go.

Benefits include:

• Better signal stability
• Multiple device support
• External antenna options
• Still low cost but faster internal network
• Newer tech – longer life

Best Value Option

TP-Link 5G Router

This is where I would recommend most people spend their money.

Compared with 4G or 4G+ you’ll typically benefit from:

• Faster download speeds
• Lower latency
• Better performance in busy areas
• Improved future-proofing

The price difference between a 4G and 5G router is often far smaller than the performance difference. Plus 5G routers tend to come with a bunch more features, like:

• Faster 2.5G Ports
• App / Better Web management
• Dedicated settings for External Antennas
• Mesh tech built in if you wish to expand in the future

Premium Option

This is my favorite option for full-time European travel.

Many people spend hundreds on a router but forget about the antenna.

An external roof-mounted antenna can often make a bigger difference than upgrading the router itself.

• Better upload speeds
• More stable connections
• Improved rural performance

We tried a few cheap antennas that made no difference or were even worse than the routers internal antennas, currently we are using the Maxwell Mimo external antenna. One year since we installed it and as of yet we have never been in a spot without signal this includes Mainland Spain, Balearic Islands, Portugal and the Canary Islands! Plus it hides away on the roof and we don’t even know it’s there.
